I love iTunes. This shit is better than driving on the countryside on a Sunday morning with Ann Coulter and the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man.
The efficiency. The sleekness. iTunes catalogs my music in a streamlined fashion, and it plays it with multiple equalizer options and settings. I can even access the iTunes Music Store so I can browse around and preview all the latest offerings before I precede to illegally download them.
Now, the one thing I love about the iTunes Music Store is this new feature called Celebrity Playlists. Basically, it consists of a selection of songs handpicked by a random celebrity who then explains their reasons for choosing the songs. You can even purchase the entire playlist at a solid discount price.
Is that not the coolest idea or what? I mean, who doesn't want to know what Paul Giamatti listens to while he's driving? iTunes Celebrity Playlists allow us to get a glimpse into the personal world of stars through the music they listen to. It shines a light on who they are as people. Because as we all know, the music we listen to defines who we are.
I for one love everything from the Deftones, Jamiroquai, and OutKast, to the Backstreet Boys, Natasha Bedingfield, and Lily Allen. So I guess that makes me pretty fucking homosexual.
So it's interesting to see what some of your favorite stars are bumping as of late. For starters, take Evangeline Lilly, the Canadian hottie of Lost fame. This chick's playlist consists of tracks from Portishead and a bunch of random ass alternative and electronic groups I've never fucking heard of. What an elitist snob.
Then there's Paul McCartney, who lists The Killers' "When You Were Young" in his playlist.
Now, I like the song. But it's Paul's reasoning for choosing it that is.....well.....killer:
"One of the things I love about bands who are performing these days - throughout the years it has actually been the same rule - is the bands who actually play their own instruments, get up there and play and sing - The Killers are one of those bands. I like people who can play live and they certainly can."
WTF?
Did he just take a shot at *NSYNC?
By that definition, Paul, why not go for Korn? Or Nickelback? I mean, those motherfuckers play their own instruments. And they perform live. I mean, are you actually congratulating people for playing music? Get the fuck out of here.
Although, choosing "Everything In Its Right Place" by Radiohead? Nice.
Dakota Fanning's playlist is pretty neat. I was expecting some elitist bullshit considering this is Dakota Fanning and its in the nature of Dakota Fanning to be Dakota Fanning like, but she's got some Beyonce, some Alicia Keys, some Rihanna, and some Prince. I mean, fuck, is this Dakota Fanning or Serena Williams?
At the end of the day, what intrigues me most about these playlists is the opportunity to discover new music. I always welcome ANY opportunity to check out a new artist, but this may be one of the coolest ways of doing so. If an artist you like says, "Yeah, this track by so-and-so is dope. I love it." Don't you feel compelled to check that song out?
I'm a big Natasha Bedingfield fan. Her brother Daniel is pretty badass too. Now, on Natasha's playlist she lists this dude Citizen Cope's song "Pablo Picasso". I checked out the 30 second preview of this track and was floored. Soulful, reggae-esque vocals, a deep ass soul beat. This was some hot shit. So I copped the album, and I absolutely positively love the fuck out of it (video after the post).
So imagine that. I discovered a new favorite artist via Natasha Bedingfield.
Thank you, Natasha! And thank you iTunes Celebrity Playlists! You rock!
*hugs and kisses abound*
