As an addendum to my Disney Channel deconstruction from a few days ago, I have to make a confession of sorts: Miley Cyrus is pretty badass.
Now, before you call me crazy (which I'm pretty sure you already have) let me explain:
So I was browsing around the world wide web looking for some new music to illegally download, when I came upon a download link for Miley Cyrus's latest opus, Breakout. And naturally, I was curious. After being force fed this chick for the past year, I've never actually taken the time to listen to one of her CDs myself.
Now, look, I know what you're thinking: "But, Anonymous Blogger, why the fuck would you want to do a thing like that?" Well, I'm an adventurous guy. Why should I go through life being totally and completely aware of something, but never actually giving said something a chance?
So, of course, I downloaded that shit. And I listened to it. And you know what? It WASN'T the worst thing to happen to Western Civilization. It was a pretty decent (albeit mostly bland) collection of pop/rock cuts. Certainly not something I'll dive into again in the future, but I walked away feeling a bit better about myself now that I have the distinction of being one of the few heterosexual males to listen to a Miley Cyrus album without hitting skip at least three times.
The point of this post, however, isn't to talk about the album as a whole. I'm writing this solely to point out one of the tracks in particular, which has now become a single (complete with a rocking music video). That song is "Fly On The Wall", a pretty slick and edgy number for Ms. Cyrus. We're talking pseudo distorted/buzz saw synth lines, slamming snares, and a deep Britney-esque vocal performance. And lyrically, it's about as confidently catty as a Disney Channel star can be:
You don't understand what it is
That makes me tick
But you wish you did
You always second guess, wonder if i say yes
But you just lose out every time
If you only knew what i talked about
When I'm with my friends just hangin' out
Then you'd have the inside scoop
On what to say, what to do
That way when you play the game
Baby you could never lose
[Chorus:]
Don't you wish that you could be a Fly on the Wall
A creepy little sneaky little Fly on the Wall
All my precious secrets, yeah
You'd know them all
Don't you wish that you could be a Fly on the Wall
You'd love to know, the things I do
When I'm with my friends, and not with you
Your always second guess, wonder if
There's other guys im flirting with
You should know by now
If you were my boyfriend, I'd be true to you
If I make a promise, I'm comin' thru
Don't you wish that you could
See me every second of the day
That way you would have no doubt
That baby iIwould never stray
[Chorus:]
Don't you wish that you could be a Fly on the Wall
A creepy little sneaky little Fly on the Wall
All my precious secrets, yeah
You'd know them all
Don't you wish that you could be a Fly on the Wall
A little communication
Well that'll go a long way
You're getting misinformation
Too much hearsay, hearsay
And what i say is
Come a little closer
And what I'm gonna say is
Don't You
Don't You
Don't You
Don't you wish you were a...
Hey!
[Chorus:]
Don't you wish that you could be a Fly on the Wall
A creepy little sneaky little Fly on the Wall
All my precious secrets, yeah
You'd know them all
Don't you wish that you could be a Fly on the Wall
The neat thing about this song is that it can, indeed, be interpreted in one of two ways: Miley could be telling her douchebag anonymous boyfriend to stop being a paranoid asswipe. OR she could be flipping the bird to all those tabloid reporters who want nothing more than to expose every little detail in the teen's personal life. That makes me tick

Sure, you can say that's such a "rebellious teenager" cliche. But when you think about it: how fucked up would it be to be Miley Cyrus these days? A few years ago she was nothing more than Billy Ray Cyrus's kid. Now, she's pop's new princess. Everything she does is put under a microscope by a desperate media determined to uncover a story in whatever is hot with the kids. It's like they go out of their way to fuck up people's days.
So even if she didn't write or produce this song in its entirety (she's credited as a co-writer), I get the sense that it's a lot more personal to Miley than a fickle anti-pop hound would give it credit for.
I applaud ya, Miley. Keep doing your thing, girl.
Oh, and tell Hayley Joel's sister to call me.
